Alexandre Calame Credited With "bernese Oberland"

Artist: Alexandre Calame Attribué à
Alexandre Calame attributed to. Unsigned oil on paper mounted on panel "L'Oberland bernois", titled on the back on a label glued to the panel. 28 x 42.6 cm. Swiss school.
Alexandre Calame (1810-1864), despite a childhood accident that left him one-eyed, showed a keen interest in painting and drawing.
In 1829, the young man became a pupil of François Diday (1802-1877), whose rival he would later become.
After discovering the art of French painters during a stay in Paris, he visited Holland and Italy to learn from the treasures these countries abounded in. However, despite the influences of the great masters he admired, he always remained a Swiss painter, solely enamored of the grandiose charm of the snowy peaks, sparkling glaciers and lakes of his native land.
He exhibited his best canvases in France, including the Bernese Oberland.
Many museums preserve his works (source: Bénézit dictionnaire des peintres et sculpteurs).
Our painting is certainly part of a series of landscapes produced by Calame from 1838 onwards in the Oberland, of which an engraving, currently preserved at the National Gallery of Art (Washington, USA), Bernese Oberland, synthesizes all the artist's ambitions.
It should be noted that our painting is an oil on paper, a medium that Calame particularly appreciated when, frantically, he was moving through the mountains.
Beautiful period wood and gilded stucco frame. Good condition.
