Marguerite Ymart, née Victorine (1864–1953), grew up in Castres (Tarn) and then moved to Paris (Montmartre) in the early 1880s. There, the Occitan artist rubbed shoulders with her compatriots Henri Rachou (1856–1944) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901), who were of the same generation and shared the same passion for the art of painting.
In 1892, Marguerite Ymart participated for the first time in the Salon des Indépendants, where she exhibited until 1896, primarily still lifes. During the same period, the artist was featured at the Salon de l’Union Artistique in Toulouse. Yet another female painter whose career suffered as a result of the success of those around her in the art world.
But between us, how many artists have emerged from the shadow of such figures, if not through the sheer force of a talent that illuminated their entire careers?
Marguerite Ymart was one of those painters, and it is through the rigor of her work, her dexterity, and her extreme sensitivity that her art is being rediscovered today as time goes on.
