Edouard Brandon "oratory Memory"
Artist: Edouard Brandon
Edouard Brandon. Oil on panel, "Souvenir of an Oratory," signed, dated, indescribably located, and dedicated: Ed Brandon 1892 ....... Ste Cécile?........A Durand Tahier. Bears a sale stamp on the back of the panel: Atelier H. Durand-Tahier. 33 x 23.8 cm. French School. Jacob Emile Edouard Brandon (1831-1897) entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1849, where he studied under Antoine-Alphonse Montfort (1802-1884), François Edouard Picot (1786-1868), and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875). The young painter went to Rome, Italy, at the age of 25, where he settled for several years. It was in Rome that he met Edgar Degas (1834-1917), with whom he formed a close friendship. Brandon is one of the leading Jewish painters of his century. It is worth noting with emotion that Edouard Brandon participated in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874. Many national and international museums possess his works. Our painting is certainly a highly accomplished preparatory study for a work exhibited in 1892 at the Salon of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts: "Oratory, Altar of Saint Cecilia," which the artist created during the same period (number 161 in the catalogue). Although the name Saint Cecilia appears to have been inscribed by the painter on the panel, we have not been able to determine with certainty which church it refers to (Paris, Rome, where Brandon frequented certain places of worship. To be confirmed). Henri Durand-Tahier (1858-1901), not only Brandon's student and friend, was also a renowned painter and art critic, and Secretary General of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Durand-Tahier owned numerous quick sketches by his friend Brandon. Contemporary gilt wood and stucco frame. Good condition. €2200.
