Romantic School "un Seul être Vous Manque, Et Tout Est Dépeuplé"
Romantic school. Oil on paper mounted on canvas "Un seul être vous manque, et tout est dépeuplé" unsigned.
Bears on the canvas, lower right, an inventory number inscribed in oil, and on the left an old glued label whose inscription has faded over time. On the back, an advertising stamp from Maison Savary, a Paris color merchant, can be seen on a stretcher post. 27 X 16 cm (28.3 X 17 cm overall). French school.
Our painting is a study on paper by a Romantic artist from the second half of the 19th century, yet to be determined. One thing is certain: he was a talented painter who masterfully expressed the despair of an inconsolable beauty.
It wasn't Julie Charles who was swept off her feet, nor Alphonse de Lamartine, but a grieving young lover.
What do these valleys, these palaces, these thatched cottages do to me,
Vain objects whose charm has vanished for me?
Rivers, rocks, forests, solitudes so dear to me,
You miss just one being, and everything is depopulated!
Framed in gilded and patinated wood and stucco from the 1930s (the painting loses some visibility due to an overly large marie louise 25.5 X 15.5 cm on view). Some minor lifting of material that does not hinder the reading of the work. Good overall condition.
1200 euros.
