This vibrant interior painting, depicting an art lover examining an old drawing, was created in 1930 by the renowned Austrian genre and landscape painter Karl Maria Schuster (1871 Purkersdorf, near Vienna – 1953 Vienna).
The work was exhibited in 1930 at the artist union House of Austrian Artist(Künstlerhaus).
Schuster studied under Julius Berger, Leopold Carl Müller, J.M. Trenkwald, and Sigmund the German. He traveled to study in Egypt, America, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, and southern France. During World War I, he served as a military painter. From 1928 to 1940, he lived in Carinthia, on the shores of Lake Wörthersee. He was famous for his Carinthian landscapes and interior scenes. In 1929, he received the silver medal from the Vienna Artists' Union ("Genossenschaft der bildenden Künstler"). The Makow Gallery in Klagenfurt organized a commemorative exhibition in his honor in 1971. In 1946, he received the Golden Laurel from the Vienna Artists' Union ("Künstlerhaus"), of which he had been a member since 1903.
