Artist: Pierre Campain (1893 - 1967)
Pierre CAMPAIN (1893–1967)

A striking and magnificent painting by Pierre Campain, created in 1924 and titled *While We Were Playing Werther*.

The work depicts an orange seller, alone in the night, sitting on a stool in front of her stall in a light rain. It is late; the street is deserted, and the lights from the building across the way are reflected on the soggy pavement.
Illuminated by a streetlamp, wrapped up in her coat and sheltered by her headscarf, she seems to be waiting for the audience to emerge from a performance of Jules Massenet’s opera *Werther*.

Like Angelo Morbelli, the famous Italian Divisionist painter, Pierre Campain excels at capturing, with striking realism, the melancholic atmosphere and the harshness of everyday life in his era.

Pierre Émile Campain (March 24, 1893 – October 21, 1967) was a French painter from Cherbourg, recognized as one of the leading artists of the Manche department in the 20th century.

He showed exceptional talent for drawing from a very early age. A student at the high school in Cherbourg, he later attended classes at the École des Beaux-Arts de Cherbourg under the guidance of Alfred Rolez, where he became friends with the painter Émile Dorrée.

His talent was quickly recognized: at just 15 years old, he won a silver medal at the Salon des artistes bas-normands in Caen (1908). In 1910, he received a prize for drawing at the Dresden International Exhibition, followed by the Conté Prize in 1911.

Throughout his career, Pierre Campain remained deeply attached to Normandy. He painted the landscapes of the Cotentin Peninsula, the ports of Cherbourg and La Hague, seascapes, and the region’s villages and monuments.
Pierre Campain died in Cherbourg on October 21, 1967, at the age of 74.
