Charles II Cromwellian Side Chair, High Period, Walnut, England 17th Century
Charles II Cromwellian-Style Chair, Haute Époque, Walnut and Oak, England, 17th Century
A characterful piece with a fine presence, this 17th-century English occasional chair is distinguished by the successful balance between solid oak and turned walnut. Its main appeal lies in the front legs with spiral-turned shafts, enriched by a remarkable double tier of superimposed spiral-turned stretchers — a particularly decorative detail that gives the piece depth, refinement and individuality. The slightly asymmetrical turning reflects honest pre-industrial craftsmanship, highly sought after by collectors of Haute Époque furniture. Its forest-green velvet upholstery, sober and elegant, enhances the depth of the woods.
Occasional chair with a flat back and straight seat. English provincial manufacture. Cromwellian style with early Charles II influences. Estimated dating: second half of the 17th century.
Mixed-wood structure combining two timber species. The rear uprights and straight rails are made of solid oak, providing structural strength to the frame. The front legs and ornamental elements are executed in walnut, chosen for its finer carving and turning qualities.
Front legs with spiral-turned shafts resting on turned feet. The front legs are joined by a remarkable double stretcher composed of superimposed spiral-turned bars. The reinforcing frame is completed by straight side and rear stretchers, forming an H-shaped lower structure.
Asymmetrical turning of the collars and discs. Clear visibility of manual, pre-industrial shaping marks. Gouge and chisel marks are apparent on the lower parts and joints.
Softly padded upholstery covered in short-pile forest-green velvet. The visible webbing beneath the seat indicates that the upholstery has been redone, probably in the 20th century. The fabric is finished with aged brass upholstery studs around the edges of the seat and backrest. Upholstery webbing visible on the underside.
Very fine overall state of preservation, with age-related patina. Sound and robust structure, with no major defects.
