History:
At the age of fourteen, Auguste Chabaud entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Avignon. In
1899, he moved to Paris to continue his artistic training at the Académie Julian and
the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Here he met Henri Matisse and André Derain. In 1901,
forced to leave Paris to earn his living,
he worked on a boat and got to know the West African coast, where many drawings
were made (Period of our painting).
He then returned to Paris, to Montmartre, where he had his studio and painted various scenes of Parisian
life. In 1911, he began sculpting, which also marked the beginning of his
cubist period. In 1913, he exhibited in New York, alongside Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Picasso.
From 1920, he experienced his "blue period".
From then on, he concentrated exclusively on the south of France.
He painted scenes of rural life, peasants, the hills and paths of the Alpilles.
He died in 1955 in Graveson. In 1992, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regional council opened the Musée Auguste Chabaud in his honor.
