Hardwood Coffee Table. China Qing Dynasty.
Beautiful deep reddish-brown wood with black veins. Very dense and heavy. Massive, solid construction. The planks and uprights have been sawn and planed by hand, and traces of this can be seen on the underside of the top and on the uprights. The construction is very old, as confirmed by a superb centuries-old patina. The sobriety and power emanating from this massive little table lead us to believe that it was made in the Ming period. However, as it is impossible to prove this, we suggest that it dates from the 18th century or earlier. Examination of the underside reveals grooves and mortises. Are these traces of vanished elements? Or was this table built using the precious woods of a much older piece of furniture that was destroyed? 82x46x35cm.
