Couple Of Painted Wax Figures, Louis XIV Style, Joined Hands
Two antique wax figures, modeled using old wooden molds (front and back), then chiseled and painted with encaustic.
(Last year, I sold part of one of these molds, which was German and dated to the 18th century.)
The two figures, with their hands joined, are in a ceremonial attitude and perhaps in devotion (wedding sacrament, santons, or popular devotional figures).
Late popular manufacture, probably 19th century (possibly early 20th century). Austria, Bohemia, Germany?
The polychromy is rather simple and naïve, with small traces of surface wear.
Average condition: the material has become brittle and fragile; it can be seen that the gentleman likely conceals repairs to the stockings that have been added, and his beautiful companion appears to have lost her head at some point…
