Flemish School "lady Of Quality With The Pearl" Around 1650
Oil on canvas, Flemish school, depicting a Lady of quality circa 1650, bearing the annotation "Aetatis suae 27" (at the age of 27) in the upper right-hand corner. This inscription confirms a commissioned portrait of a young woman from Dutch high society.
This portrait adopts the codes of the Baroque, the bust is frontal but the face is three-quartered. In a theatrical posture often inspired by Italian painting, the gaze upwards, outwards from the frame, is reminiscent of saints in ecstasy. The face and décolleté emerge from the chiaroscuro, highlighting the porcelain complexion with rosy cheekbones and luscious lips of intense carmine red. Despite the theatricality, the artist's realism preserves the roundness of the face and a slight double chin. Her finery and costume also testify to the high status of this young woman, such as her dress draped in a rich ultramarine-blue fabric embroidered with gold, her décolleté highlighted by fine lace tied with a red silky ribbon, her dark hair up, revealing a few curls and highlighting her earring. This portrait is typical of the Flemish Golden Age, with its great technical mastery, particularly in the rendering of textures and realism, and can be compared to the work of painters such as Erasmus Quellinus II in Antwerp or Jan Van Bylert in Utrecht.
It is preserved in a later black lacquered and gilded wooden frame.
Good condition, restorations from use and maintenance ( repainting notably in the background) foxed.
