Desk Lamp By Louis Kalff For Philips Circa 1960
Artist: Louis Kalff 1897-1976
Rare and iconic modernist desk lamp designed by the famous Dutch architect and designer Louis Kalff, historical art director of the Philips house in the 1950s-1960s. This model perfectly illustrates the search for geometric purity and functionality specific to Kalff, often referred to as creator of the "Mushroom" or "Saucer" silhouette for post-war lighting. The object has a great harmony of materials and lines: A large circular reflector in satin-finished slate gray lacquered metal, with a straight edge allows for optimal and subdued diffusion of light downwards. The tapered central base in shiny chromed steel rests on a matching lacquered metal weighted circular base, housing its original white push button.
