Faune Albani, White Marble Bust, Signed C. Caira, Late 19th Century

A superb bust in white statuary marble depicting the famous “Faun of Albani” (or Laughing Satyr), based on an ancient model. This sculpture, of exceptional craftsmanship, is signed on the back “ C. Caira ”, for Cesare Caira, an Italian sculptor active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, renowned for the technical virtuosity of his marble and alabaster carving workshops, based in Italy, particularly in Tuscany.
The work faithfully reproduces the iconographic elements of the Roman marble sculpture (c. 100 B.C.) housed at the Glyptothek in Munich: a mischievous smile subtly revealing the teeth, dynamic features, expressive eyes, and a full head of hair sculpted in unruly locks, concealing small, pointed ears. The sculpture rests on its original circular marble pedestal. A work of exquisite finesse, ideal for a classical decor, a library, or a cabinet of curiosities.
