Art Deco-style pastel portrait of “Woman with a Fox Terrier,” signed “J Cermais” in the lower right and dated “37,” by Charles Boucher Cermaise, a French artist of the first half of the 20th century known in particular for his intimate portraits; he exhibited, notably, at the University of Houston in the United States, where he enjoyed great success. This portrait, dated 1937, depicts a woman dressed in yellow sitting in an armchair, affectionately holding her fox terrier on her lap; This work exudes great tenderness and a subtle charm, enhanced by its meticulous composition and delicate details, such as the coral cabochon ring the woman wears on her right hand.
