The Entombment, Renaissance After Lelio Orsi (1508–1587)

Artist: D'aprés Lelio Orsi 1508-1587
Oil on canvas, "The Entombment," based on the original work by Lelio Orsi (1508–1587), housed at the Nîmes Museum of Fine Arts. Lelio Orsi was an Italian Renaissance painter, draftsman, and architect whose work is part of the Mannerist movement. This artistic movement drew inspiration from the greatest artists of the High Renaissance, such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael..., while also marking a certain departure from them.
Our painting depicts, in the foreground, Mary, overcome with grief; dressed in a dark gown, she lies half-reclined on the ground, supported by Saint John the Evangelist, who is clad in a bright red cloak and is trying to comfort her. In the middle ground, Christ, draped in a white shroud, is carried by two men—likely Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Surrounding the scene in the background are the holy women, including Mary Magdalene, and the disciples, marked by grief and terror, some of whom are in prayer. This composition is rich in vivid colors set against a chiaroscuro atmosphere, as well as details evoking the Passion—such as the crown of thorns, the linens, and the jars of ointment for preparing the body.
This 17th-century painting is the work of a skilled follower of Orsi, whose talent was mistakenly conflated in the 19th century with that of Rubens; a plaque bearing Rubens’ name was affixed during a reframing in a Renaissance-style frame featuring broad gadroons and acanthus leaves.
Good condition, with standard restoration and conservation work (re-lining and some pictorial retouching, particularly in the backgrounds)
