Italian school, 17th-century oil on canvas depicting a Persian Sibyl after a painting attributed to Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, 1591-1666), Italian master of the Bologna school, Baroque period. The Sibyl of Persia, one of the 12 sibyls of Antiquity. She is depicted writing her prophecies, her head resting on her hand, looking pensive. Sibyls were supposed to prophesy the coming of Christ, hence their frequent presence in Catholic religious art. Restored painting and frame. Measures, 72x58cm and with frame 88x75cm.
