17th Battle Scene Painting On Slate
Oil painting on slate depicting a battle scene, Italy, 17th century.
"Painting on slate" (or painting on stone) is a technique developed in the 16th century by Sebastiano del Piombo, who experimented with oil paints first on the walls of the Borgherini Chapel in S. Pietro in Montorio and then on the slab depicting the Nativity of the Virgin in S. Maria del Popolo, completed by Francesco Salviati. The reasons for this technical experimentation lie in the desire of patrons and artists to make the painting ‘eternal’ so that “neither fire nor woodworms could harm them,” to use Vasari’s words, at a time when Rome had recently suffered extensive damage due to the Sack of 1527.
Slate (or “Lavagna stone”) has almost zero porosity and a dark color that gives the paintings unique depth and luminosity. If we look at our painting, we see a knight dressed in red, wearing a helmet and armor, emerge from the black background, mounted on a white steed rearing up: to his right, two horsemen follow him, while another awaits him on his left; he is certainly a commander, for his gestures seem to signal the start of a battle. The battle genre enjoyed enormous success during the 17th century, thanks to painters such as Jacques Courtois (known as “the Burgundian”) and Salvator Rosa. Chiaroscuro was widely used to highlight the bodies and metal armor, and in this case, the black slate background is ideal. Battle scenes on slate, however, are rare; religious or mythological themes are far more common. Yet this small slab has been painted with meticulous skill, concentrating a scene of great dynamism within a small space.
It is mounted in an Empire-style frame, likely custom-made in the 19th century to replace the original, which has been lost.
