A beautiful French shuttle-shaped inkwell from the First Empire period, early 19th century.
The inkwell depicts two dolphins with intertwined tails holding a shell, which conceals two inkwell basins, each covered by finely engraved lids. The entire set rests on a base of Aleppo breccia marble.
This inkwell is one of those prestigious objects produced during the Empire period to decorate luxurious settings: they adorned the desks of prominent figures and were crafted, depending on their social status, from the finest materials. The base of Aleppo breccia, a prized and extremely expensive marble, and the excellent quality of the gilding and engraving confirm its provenance from a very high social class.
