16th Venetian Terracotta Bas-relief "the Adoration Of The Magi" Dated 1518
Artist: Atelier Vénitien
Terracotta bas-relief depicting "The Adoration of the Magi," from a Venetian workshop, dated 1518.
The scene shows the Virgin and Child seated on the left, while on the right a kneeling Magi, likely Melchior, holds a casket open before the Baby Jesus. Behind them appear the other two Magi, Caspar and Balthazar, with their respective gifts. The relief is framed by a round arch, a typical element of Renaissance architecture. Beneath the arch is a coat of arms bearing the date 1518, while two cherubs appear on either side of the arch. The heraldic elements are virtually illegible, making it impossible to identify the patron. The modeling, however, displays characteristics typical of early 16th-century Venetian sculpture, not least the Virgin’s veil, which draws on the Northern European tradition with which the Veneto region, given its geographical position, often came into contact.
The bas-relief has a repaired crack running from side to side, old restorations, and small losses, but its beauty remains undiminished. The checkered floor is beautiful and creates a sense of perspective; the faces and garments of the figures are refined: note the Magi on the right removing his headdress in the presence of the Virgin and Child.
Provenance: Larminet-Davioud Collection, Lille
