Marble Fragment-woman's Head-antique-roman-sculpture
Long female figure - Antique relief fragment in marble
Probable Roman period, AD 1st-3rd century
Dimensions:
Height: 8 cm
Width: 16 cm
Thickness: 6 cm
This marble sculpted fragment depicts a partially preserved female figure, most likely part of a larger antique decorative ensemble. The composition reveals a head seen in profile or slightly inclined, accompanied by a folded arm and a supple treatment of the hair, giving the whole a certain fluidity despite the fragmentary state of the work.
Softened volumes, rounded contours and simplified work on the locks or folds, characteristics frequently found in provincial decorative reliefs of the Roman period. This type of fragment could have belonged to an architectural decoration, a funerary element, a votive relief or even a sarcophagus decoration.
