French School, 19th century.
Watercolor medallion in good original condition, recent restorations, signed "Pascal Blanchard".
This watercolor depicts an interior with a taste for eclecticism:
a white-painted terracotta vase (circa 1800) sits alongside an Orientalist fabric, a Louis XVI mahogany side table (circa 1785), and a Louis XVIII armchair (circa 1825).
The colors are bright and intense, particularly those of the ceramics and the fabric curtain.
Dimensions:
22 x 15 cm (34 x 28 cm with frame).
Painting in good condition, with minor restorations, under glass.
Molded giltwood medallion frame decorated with beaded friezes, in good condition.
Pascal Blanchard (1807-1900), watercolorist, was an academic painter who studied at The Julian Academy. Georges Desvallières, one of his fellow students, painted portraits of close relatives and friends, such as Pascal Blanchard's wife, a famous portrait now held and exhibited at the Petit Palais Museum in Paris. Blanchard exhibited genre scenes and portraits at the Paris Salon in the 1880s.
