Marble Capital with Late Corinthian Decoration – Late Antiquity / Early Middle Ages
4th–7th century AD
Marble capital carved on three faces, featuring a late Corinthian decorative scheme composed of two superimposed registers of deeply undercut acanthus leaves, with caulicoli and volutes, surmounted by an abacus adorned with a central floral motif.
The basket displays an elongated side and a more roughly finished reverse, indicating an engaged capital, most likely a pilaster capital, intended to be set against a wall within a monumental architectural context.
Height: 24 cm
Condition: losses, chips and old surface wear consistent with its age, with patina and weathering coherent with an ancient architectural element.
