Antique Scene Of A Neoclassical Painting-19th Century School Circa 1870

"The Death of Britannicus" according to Tacitus

French school - circa 1870 (In the ambito of the NOUVELLE ATHENES Gallery this painting can be dated to around 1870 in Paris)
Neo-Greek style Oil on canvas, 29 x 51 cm
20th century sloping frame, 39 x 61 cm

Although it is not yet associated with a specific project, this sketch painting immediately recalls, through its iconography, the painting "The Romans of Decadence" by Thomas Couture. This subject, very well known, is however rare in terms of works listed.

The painting presents a central character dressed in an undone toga, revealing his torso, handing a cup of wine to an already drunk and sleeping companion. Crowned with laurel, supported by a cupbearer holding an oenochoe and a woman with a lyre, this character is in some way deified.

The scene, evoking Dionysian moments, takes place in an ancient landscape, restoring a much-fantasized atmosphere of Roman debauchery. This fine work, painted with a sure and unrepentant gesture, is certainly the work of an academic painter who has yet to be identified. Despite the mystery surrounding its attribution, the work remains aesthetically and iconographically interesting, with a beautiful, very decorative panoramic format.
