France, 19th century
Neo-Gothic with archaic/antiquarian influences, depicting Saint Joseph
Dimensions:
H. 166 cm – W. 45 cm – D. 40 cm.
Approx. 500 kg.
Limestone sculpture representing a standing male figure, identified as Saint Joseph by the presence of a bouquet of lilies held against his chest. The figure is draped in a full cloak with deeply carved vertical and transverse folds.
The head is missing.
The hands are partially preserved; the right hand holds the bouquet, of which several fragments of stems and stylized flowers remain.
The garment displays a regular treatment of the folds, characteristic of 19th-century religious statuary inspired by Gothic and Renaissance models.
The surface shows traces of erosion, old losses, and remnants of soiling, indicating prolonged outdoor exposure.
The original polygonal base is preserved.
No modern repainting is apparent.
Sound structure, despite some wear on the lower part.
This piece likely originated from an architectural ensemble or church decoration.
