Panther Claw Necklace
Kayapo people (Mebêngôkre), Brazilian Amazon
XXᵉ century - Field collection
Important circular ceremonial necklace, consisting of an assembly of claws mounted on an ancient braided plant fiber structure.
In a tight, regular arrangement, these claws form a rigid crown with a remarkable sculptural presence.
The visual effect relies on the repetition and tension of the motif, creating a spectacular silhouette characteristic of the great prestige finery of the Kayapo peoples (Mebêngôkre).
The ensemble develops a palette of natural tones ranging from light ivory to deep brown nuances.
The designation "necklace of panther claws" is taken from Jean-Pierre Dutilleux's publication, in which the work is reproduced and captioned under this appellation in French and English ("Necklace of panther claws").
Presented at exhibitions with its original multilingual label, featuring the designation "Necklace of panther claws" in French, German, Dutch and English, this label now accompanies the piece.
Within Kayapo societies, adornments elaborated from animal elements participate in the affirmation of rank, prestige and collective identity during ceremonies and ritual gatherings.
