African Tribal Art - Dan Mask

Belgian Guy Mercier collection.

The mask is sold without the base, a universal base (35€) or custom-made (45€) can be provided on request.

For the Dan, also known as Yacouba, living in western Ivory Coast and Liberia, the cosmic force called "dü" that animates the world manifests itself through the sculpted masks. According to their belief, this force seeks to transmit knowledge to man to offer him support, mainly using the channel of dreams. The spirits then guide the artisans on how to name and shape the mask they wish to see created. These masks, of various types, serve social, spiritual, and political functions, and often evolve over time in response to community needs and changes.
