The Ogoni inhabit the coastal regions of Nigeria, near the mouth of the Cross River, south of the Igbo territory and west of that of the Ibibio. Their sculptural productions vary according to the villages, but they are best known for their masks with movable jaws, similar to certain Ekpo masks of the Ibibio. These masks were traditionally used during funerals, festivals linked to sowing or harvesting, and, more recently, to welcome honored guests. The karikpo celebrations, marked by acrobatic performances accompanied by the kere karikpo drum, were also an opportunity to present various masks representing animals.
