African Tribal Art - Bamana Mask

French collection of African art.

A universal base (35€) or custom-made (45€) can be ordered with the mask.

Based in central and southern Mali, the Bambara, also known as "Bamana" or "unbelievers" by Muslims, are part of the vast Mande ethnic group, alongside the Soninke and Malinke. Bambara artisans, called nyamakala, and in particular blacksmiths called numu, are responsible for carving ritual objects impregnated with nyama, an occult energy. They also act as healers and diviners, using fire and magical objects. Their skills are passed on to their wives, who are the only ones authorized to make pottery. Bambara society is structured into six male associations, called Dyow, which use Bambara masks. The young men first integrate the n'tomo circumcision society, then that of komo, nama, kono, koré and finally the Tyi Wara agrarian society.
