African Tribal Art - Chamba Mama Mask
Belgian Guy Mercier collection.
The extremely sober masks are an integral part of the Mama's mangam rituals, also known as Kantana. These masks are used by a male association within the ethnic group to ensure social stability and stimulate agricultural production. They are particularly associated with the northern regions of Benoué, where several ethnic groups make masks with a very refined style, generally worn horizontally.
