African Tribal Art - Lega Mask

Belgian collection.

Among the Lega, the Bwami society, accessible to men and women, governed social and political life. There were up to seven levels of initiation, each linked to distinct emblems. After their exodus from Uganda in the 17th century, the Lega settled on the west bank of the Lualaba River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Social recognition and authority were personal achievements: a chief was chosen for his qualities, his heart (mutima), his good conduct, his intelligence and his exemplary behavior. During ritual ceremonies, the Idumu masks, which belonged to the community, were exhibited to the initiates, positioned on a barrier and surrounded by smaller individual masks.
