African Tribal Art - Dogon Statue

French collection.

Sculpted mainly on commission from a family, Dogon statues can also be venerated by the entire community. Their exact role remains poorly understood. In parallel with Islam, Dogon religious rites are structured around four main cults: the Lébé, dedicated to fertility and led by the Hogon, the Wagem, which honors the ancestors under the leadership of the patriarch, the Binou, which calls upon the spirit world and is supervised by the priest of the Binou, and finally the society of masks, linked to funeral ceremonies.

Piece accompanied by its certificate of authenticity.
