African Tribal Art - Dogon Bronze Urn

French collection of African art.

The Dogon are renowned for their cosmogony, their myths and their legends. Their population, estimated at around 300,000 people, lives in the Mopti region of Mali, notably in Bandiagara, Koro, Banka, near Douentza, as well as in part of northern Burkina Faso, northwest of Ouahigouya. Their villages, often perched on top of the scree of the hills, present a unique architecture. Dogon blacksmiths belong to an endogamous caste called irim. They make various items such as weapons, tools and also work with wood. In Dogon cosmogony, they are considered the "Masters of Fire", associated with the primordial beings called "Nommo", created by the god Ama. Additionally, they are renowned for their ability to heal burns.
