African Tribal Art - Bambara Mask

Ex-French collection.

The Bambara, also called Bamana, are present in the central and southern regions of Mali. The term "Bambara" means "unbeliever" and was given to them by Muslims. They are part of the vast Mande group, alongside the Soninke and the Malinke. It is during the initiation ceremonies of young boys linked to the society of Ntomo, n'domo, and shared with their Malinke neighbors (notably the Marka, a subgroup including Peuls and Moors living north of the Bambara), that the Bambara make these masks dance. After these rituals, the young people joined the Komo association, the most respected among them, which governed community life.
