As a symbol of social order, this African mask of the Dan people, with a realistic, almond-shaped face and prominent, curved lips, features circular eye sockets. A simple raffia goatee adorns this classic African sculpture from Côte d’Ivoire. Smooth, satiny patina.
The masks featuring round eye sockets (called gunyeya or gunye ge), which facilitate vision, are part of the repertoire of masks of the northern Dan and are used for racing competitions during the dry season. The zapkei ge go ge, a royal mask reserved for exceptional events. The “déanglé,” known as the “mocker” with slanted eyes, embodying an ideal of beauty, plays an active role between the initiation camp and the village.
