African Mask In The Punu Style (gabon)
African mask in the Punu style (Gabon), carved from light wood and coated with white kaolin, featuring a beautiful oval face with half-closed slit eyes, lips painted red, and a delicately defined brow. It is adorned with a diamond-shaped mark on the forehead and a pattern of red, grid-like scarifications on the temples. The tiered bun-style headdress, striated with fine incisions and weathered by time, is accented by a headband of braided fibers and cowrie shells. The hollowed-out back retains its woven fabric headdress and inner rattan wickerwork, as well as fringes of plant fibers—signs of actual use or meticulous artisanal craftsmanship. The kaolin shows natural wear, with some areas where material is missing and signs of aging, as visible in the photos. A beautiful decorative piece of primitive art, full of character, that will fit perfectly in an ethnic, bohemian, or collector’s home. Approximate dimensions to be specified. Sold as shown in the photos; the period and age are subject to the buyer’s assessment.
