Mask - Baoulé / Ivory Coast
Among African productions, Baoulé objects are particularly accessible to Western tastes due to their aesthetic standards but also the finesse of execution of their masks and their statuary. The thin sculpted lips forming this oval mouth are characteristic of the aesthetic standards of the production of Baoulé masks. We will also highlight the formation of the eyebrow arches, found in the center of the forehead, in order to form the nose. Note the care given to the sculpted hairstyle, falling on the sides and the face of the mask; this hairstyle is traversed by sumptuous engraved patterns, forming grids. The serrated border, pierced with holes running around the contours of this mask, testifies to the great assurance of the craftsman's hand.
