"Nkisi Statue"
This dog-shaped Nkisi nkondi illustrates the power of Kongo power figures. Carved from wood, the dog has a menacing open mouth, while its back is literally bristling with nails driven into it during rituals. Each nail or blade activated the spirit housed within the figure, calling for intervention in serious matters: justice, oaths, protection, or revenge. The double muzzle evokes supernatural vigilance. A guard animal par excellence, this nkisi dog becomes a formidable intercessor, summoning invisible forces to defend or punish.
