Bronze Queen's Head From Ifé Art .
Ifé Bronze Queen's Head
Piece made using the ancestral lost-wax technique. Actual size. Height 35 cm, profile 21 cm, weight 3.187 kg.
Circa, mid 20th c. 50's.
The Oba of Benin is the ruler of the ancient kingdom of Benin. He has had no real power since the kingdom was annexed by the British in 1897. However, he retains a consultative role within the government. He also retains a strong influence over the Edo population, for whom he has a semi-divine nature. His palace is located in present-day Benin City (Edo State, Nigeria).
The Kingdom of Benin fascinated Europeans with the exceptional quality of its court art, right from the first commercial and artistic exchanges in the 15th century.
Court artists expressed themselves in precious media: bronze, various copper alloys, ivory, and more rarely iron and wood. Masters of the lost-wax casting technique since the 13th century, they produced naturalistic works of exceptional quality.
In addition to these royal representations, we also find zoomorphic sculptures from the Ifé basins (the Nigerian capital and religious center, and Owo, another Nigerian city).
