A small anthropomorphic mask carved from a single piece of wood, featuring finely drawn brow ridges that meet to form a slender nasal ridge – thus creating a stylised heart shape.
Its coffee-bean-shaped eyes are openwork and highlighted with white kaolin pigments. Its small mouth is also openwork, forming an irregular horizontal slit.
This mask was used in the Bwani initiation rite.
It bears an old collector’s label on the reverse.
