African Tribal Art - Songye Statue

Belgian private collection.

These protective fetishes, intended to secure homes, are among the most sought after in Africa. The Nkisi acts as a mediator between gods and men. Large statues are held collectively by a village, while smaller ones are the property of an individual or family. In the 16th century, the Songyes migrated from the Shaba region to settle on the left bank of the Lualaba. Their society follows a patriarchal organization. Their history is deeply linked to that of the Luba, with whom they share common ancestors.
