Three types of Kifwebe African masks are listed: the male (kilume), generally with a high crest; the female (kikashi), which typically has a more modest crest or none at all, and finally the largest one embodying power (kia ndoshi). In the 16th century, the Songye migrated from the Shaba region to settle on the left bank of the Lualaba River. Their society is organized patriarchally. Their history is inextricably linked to that of the Luba, to whom they are related through common ancestors.Divination, which played a major role in society, made it possible to identifywitches and shed light on the causes of the misfortunesthat befell individuals. Also used by the Luba, worn with a long costume and a long beard made of natural fibers, the Kifwebe masks acted as a secret police force in support of the ruling authority, controlling individuals through magic. They also appeared duringcrucial stages of initiation ceremonies.
