Reliquary Basket Mitsogo
A rare and antique Mitsogo reliquary basket from Gabon, measuring 63 cm in height (excluding the included hardwood stand). It features a patina of use with localized glossy areas resulting from extensive handling. The piece consists of the upper body of a figure set within a wicker basket; it has an elongated head, an inverted-triangle mouth, and half-closed eyes, with the crown of the head supporting a traditional headdress. Pronounced tribal scarification marks the face, forehead, and abdomen. The expressive figure has a menacing air, with arms folded and hands resting on the sides of the belly, highlighting the beautiful geometric scarification; the barely defined chest leaves the figure's gender ambiguous, and it features a prominent navel.
