Description
Rectangular porcelain cigar box from the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, made around 1943. Enamelled porcelain with painted and gilded decoration. The lid has a deep cobalt blue background enhanced by a golden imperial eagle holding a swastika, placed on two crossed scepters. The belt is adorned with a vermiculate gold decoration placed on the fire, framed by a golden net. The inside of the lid bears a golden handwritten signature "Hermann Göring". On the back: Sèvres brand with double intertwined S dated 1943, golden iron cross and original skates.
Resting on golden skates in the fire, this copy testifies to a higher degree of finish within this series made by the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres.
The box is kept in its original presentation box covered with midnight blue velvet.
Historical context
During the Occupation (1940–1944), the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres was forced to execute various orders to the German authorities. These include tableware, plates, plates and cigar boxes linked to Hermann Göring, Reichsmarschall. These pieces are distinguished by the presence of personal emblems and a golden signature applied inside the lids. They were intended for representational uses or protocol presents. The archives mention a production of about three hundred cigar boxes, only a part of which was delivered. The bombing of April 4, 1943 damaged part of the production in progress, leading to decorative adjustments, including the addition of a vermiculate gold decoration recommended by Director Janneau.
