Neoclassical Two-layer Agate Cameo

Late 18thᵉ century, circa 1770-1790
First Empire mount, circa 1805-1815

Two-layer agate, gold and translucent blue enamel
Height: 30 mm
Width: 26 mm
Ring thickness: 3 mm

Rare antique cameo finely engraved in two-layer agate, depicting an idealized female bust in the taste of ancient imperial effigies. The profile, treated according to the great canons of late XVIIIᵉ century neoclassicism, presents a remarkable purity of line and great finesse of execution.

The engraving, of particularly meticulous quality, perfectly exploits the natural contrasts of the stone while respecting its original surface. The modelling of the face, the delicacy of the eyes and the elaborate treatment of the hairstyle testify to work of the highest standard, probably from an Italian workshop active in the late XVIIIᵉ century.

The cameo is preserved in its antique gold mount from the First Empire period, circa 1805-1815, of refined construction. Unlike simply hooped mounts, this one fully encases the stone, background and edge being dressed in gold, revealing a particularly luxurious and precious realization.

The set is sublimated by an elegant translucent blue enamel surround, typical of French imperial taste of the early XIXᵉ century, providing a remarkable contrast with the black and ivory tones of the agate.

A male cameo of comparable model, preserved in an identical frame and from the collection of Princes Murat, was published in Marché de l'Art, 2015

Very good condition.
Photograph made in natural light, unmodified.
