Pair Of Portraits By Anselm Wagner (romanian, 1766 Timisoara - 1806), Attributed To
Artist: Anselm Wagner
A pair of pastel portraits of Daniel Edler von Czerva (from the plate on the frame) and his wife were produced in the last quarter of the 18th century and, due to their very similar style, have been attributed to Romanian portraitist Anselm Wagner (1766 Timisoara - 1806). For comparison, see several pastel portraits by Wagner by following this link:

Anselm Wagner (1766 Timisoara (Temeswar), Romania - 1806) was the son of Viennese painter Michael Wagner (1731-1783), who had settled in Transylvania (Romania).
Anselm studied at the Vienna Academy with Danish artist Johann Jakob Stunder. He was also influenced by the Baroque style of Meytens, turning (around 1796) to the Rococo style and then to a neoclassical approach. From around 1799, Wagner traveled to the Transylvanian towns of Sibiu, Brașov, Cluj and Mintia, where he painted portraits of the Gyulay noble family. In time, Wagner abandoned religious painting for portraits in oils, miniatures and pastels, and painted many portraits in Transylvania.
