Classic Still Life With Flowers In A Basket By Jacob Van Huysum, A Pupil Of

Artist: Jacob Van Huysum, Disciple De
This classic, antique floral still life, executed with great finesse, was painted by a pupil of the famous Dutch still-life painter Jacob Van Huysum (c. 1686–c. 1740).

Van Huysum was the fourth son of Justus and the younger brother of Jan. He served his apprenticeship in the studio of a renowned family of still-life painters. An exuberant Baroque composition, combined with meticulous attention to detail, characterizes the work of the two brothers. Jacob is notable for having brought the van Huysum style to England, where he also made a name for himself as an imitator of the great masters, thus following in his brother’s footsteps. Houghton Hall, in Norfolk, houses several Italianate compositions by van Huysum, most of them unsigned, inspired by artists such as Michele Pace del Campidoglio.
