Arnold Busch was the father of the Hamburg illustrator Wilhelm Martin Busch (1908-1987). With his artistic talent, he studied fine arts at the Dresden Academy and was a pupil of Carl Bantzer and Philipp Franck. He undertook study trips to Italy, Russia, France, Ceylon, and India. In 1901, he was appointed professor at the Royal School of Art and Commerce in Breslau, which awarded him the title of professor in 1912. In January 1915, he was assigned to the army high command as a war painter. He spent the next three years mainly on the Eastern Front, in various headquarters. In 1918, he bought a house in Falkenhain, near Altheide-Bad. The house burned down in January 1945 (unrelated to the war). He lived there with his family until 1946. From 1937 to 1944, except in 1941, Busch was represented at all major exhibitions of German art in Munich with paintings corresponding to Nazi artistic concepts. In 1938, Hitler acquired few military portraits in 1938-1939. In 1943, Busch exhibited a full-length portrait of Nazi officer Ernst Busch. In 1944, Nazi leader Martin Bormann acquired Portrait of My Son in Knight's Armor for 3,000 Reichsmarks. After Germany's defeat in World War II, Busch was forced to leave his home in Falkenhain. He settled in Cismar, near the seaside resort of Grömitz on the coast of the Bay of Lübeck, where he died in 1951. Busch painted mainly landscapes and portraits (including Paul von Hindenburg and Erich Ludendorff (1916) and Joseph Goebbels (1937)) and participated in numerous exhibitions in Breslau, Berlin, Hamburg, Dortmund, and Vienna. He was also a member of the Silesian Artists' Association until its dissolution in 1936.
