oil on canvas (Dimensions (cm): 96 x 73 - with frame 112 x 88)

This splendid work depicts a beautiful female figure, dressed in rich garments and with refined features, gazing down toward the ground.
This is Saint Catherine of Alexandria, recognizable by her typical iconographic attributes: the crown and regal garments, alluding to her princely origins, and the palm in one hand and the cogwheel, recalling her martyrdom.
Thanks to her noble origins, Catherine of Alexandria was able to devote her life to study, surrounding herself with scholars and learned men, becoming highly erudite, especially in philosophy and religion; her figure, which has inspired a rich body of iconography throughout Europe, has garnered a large following due to the characteristics that distinguish her: she represents a woman of great intelligence, overturning a millennia-old prejudice, with a strong and intrepid character, capable of opposing force with the determination of her faith and her knowledge.
We are looking at a painting of uncommon beauty, a female portrait that instills in the viewer’s eyes a sense of rare formal perfection, made tangible by details such as the grace of her bearing and the precision of the Saint’s face and hands, which appear haughty and aristocratic, without pompous accessories or jewelry that might distract the attention.
This is despite the fact that the painting is characterized by a deeply spiritual atmosphere, with the Saint isolated in meditation and silent devotion.
Specifically, this is a high-quality version of the famous Saint Catherine of Alexandria that Guido Reni created around 1638—as a pair with a Saint Margaret—for the Roman collection of Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna (1637–1689) and which is currently housed in the City Art Gallery in Manchester [1].
In our case, we are looking at a fine version which, reflecting the best of Reni’s figurative style, would suggest its authorship lies within the master’s inner circle, likely linking it to one of his collaborators or pupils.
Upon closer examination of the canvas’s stylistic features, we are inclined to suggest as a possible author one of the pupils closest to the master, specifically Francesco Gessi (Bologna 1588–1649), due to the painting technique, the stylistic characteristics, the color choices tending toward a bright yet subdued palette, and above all, the details of the face.
