17th-century Painting, Portrait Of Cardinal Clement VII Of Verona, Italy, Nobleman, Coat Of Arms

An early 17th-century oil on canvas depicting the portrait of Girolamo Trevisan, a Cardinal of the Italian Renaissance. This important churchman, originally from Verona, was appointed cardinal on December 11, 1530, by Pope Clement VII, coinciding precisely with the date of a consistory. The upper portion bears an inscription in Old Italian mentioning his name and origin: "Girolamo... Veronese," while the lower portion specifies: "He was created on December 11, 1530, he died on October 25." "Created" refers to his appointment as Cardinal. In the upper left of the painting is a coat of arms, now partially faded, recalling the Cardinal rank of this eminent figure: a light-colored shield surmounted by a clerical hat. The figure is depicted in a bust portrait, dressed in a dark garment with a white collar, and wearing a kind of blue scarf adorned with black crosses. He appears still young, his gaze benevolently directed towards the viewer. This painting, dating from the very beginning of the 17th century, is in its original condition. It was relined at some point in the past; the varnish has yellowed and dulled the much more vibrant original colors. There is some wear attesting to its age. This portrait belongs to the tradition of portrait galleries of prelates and illustrious figures, often created in the 17th century for religious institutions or scholarly collections.
