Religious Painting, 17th-18th Century, Depicting The Education Of The Virgin Mary, Catholic Religion, Saint Anne, 18th Century
Antique oil painting on canvas, late 17th/early 18th century, depicting the education of the Virgin Mary. She is shown as a child, guided by Saint Anne, under the benevolent gaze of a sacred female figure, most likely Saint Elizabeth, a symbol of wisdom and spiritual transmission. Saint Elizabeth holds a book, representing wisdom, and a pastoral staff, symbolizing piety. Upon closer inspection, one notices a small cherub above the staff. This representation is quite mysterious. The warm palette, dominated by red and blue, is typical of 18th-century religious painting. The subtly rendered light enhances the mystical and contemplative atmosphere of the scene, lending the whole a great emotional sensitivity. This painting was relined at some point in the past. A small patch has been affixed to the back. There are a few flakes of paint. As with many antique paintings, the varnish has yellowed. Lightening the varnish would allow the original vibrant colors to stand out more clearly. Size: 74 cm x 48.50 cm.
